Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost on 14 September 1955, is the 267th and current pope of the Catholic Church. He is the first pope from the United States and North America, and has also been a citizen of Peru since 2015. He was elected pope on 8 May 2025 following the papal conclave that resulted from Pope Francis I's death on 21 April.

Biography[]

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Prevost dedicated his early clerical career to the Order of Saint Augustine. His service included extensive work in Peru from 1985 to 1986 and 1988 to 1998, where he served as a parish pastor, diocesan official, seminary teacher, and administrator. Elected Prior General of the Order of Saint Augustine from 2001 to 2013, he later returned to Peru as Bishop of Chiclayo (2015–2023). In 2023, Pope Francis appointed him Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and the president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, and created him a cardinal the same year. These roles elevated his prominence as a papal candidate.
