"Gospel" means "good news," and the Gospels tell of the life and teachings of Jesus.
In the cannon: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Outside the cannon: Thomas, Peter, Mary Magdalene and some others. Many of the noncanonical gospels are gnostic and considered heretical. However, other noncanonical gospels (such as the Protoevangelium of James) are the source of various Catholic and Orthodox traditions concerning the early life of Jesus.
