English is the language of the Angles, Saxons and Jutes as it developed in England and spread around the world during the days of the British Empire. English is one of the main languages of international diplomacy.

The Douay-Rheims Bible was the first complete translation into English. The second, the King James Version, was the first version authorized by the British crown, and remains widely used today among more conservative Christians despite its somewhat archaic language. The New King James Version updates the language while retaining the meaning.

Other widely used English translations of the Bible include the New International Version, the Revised Standard Version and Today's English Version (Good News Bible).
