In some denominations, a diocese is an area or region under the jurisdiction of a bishop, constituting a territory of administration within the Church. In Lutheranism, this is known as a synod.
In Anglican polity, the diocese is the primary unit of common life and work in the Church. A diocese is normally governed by a bishop (called the diocesan bishop or the ordinary), often with the assistance of a suffragan bishop.
A diocese consists of a number of parishes, which can be grouped in deaneries or archdeaconries. Dioceses may be grouped together into a province.
The word "diocese" comes from the Greek διοκησις, diokesis.
